Express Entry is Canada's flagship system for skilled-worker permanent residence, and in 2026 it is faster and more category-driven than ever. But the official documentation is dense. This guide explains the entire journey in plain English โ the programs, the scoring, the costs, and the exact order of steps.
Step 1: Know which of the three programs you fit
Express Entry manages three federal programs. You enter one pool and are ranked against everyone in it.
- Federal Skilled Worker (FSW) โ for skilled workers with foreign experience. Has its own points grid you must pass before CRS even applies.
- Canadian Experience Class (CEC) โ for people with skilled Canadian work experience. The fastest stream for those already in Canada.
- Federal Skilled Trades (FST) โ for qualified tradespeople.
Not sure your job qualifies? Look up your occupation with the NOC Finder โ your NOC and TEER category determine eligibility.
Step 2: Calculate your CRS score
Once in the pool, you are ranked by your Comprehensive Ranking System score out of 1,200. We break the points down fully in our CRS score guide, but the fastest way to see yours is the free CRS Calculator. Language is usually the biggest lever โ convert your test with the IELTS Band Calculator first.
Step 3: Understand category-based draws (the 2026 game-changer)
Instead of only inviting the highest scorers overall, Canada now runs category-based draws targeting specific needs:
- Healthcare and social services occupations
- STEM occupations
- Skilled trades
- Transport and agriculture
- Strong French-language proficiency โ often the lowest cut-offs of all
If you fall into a category, your effective cut-off can be far lower than a general draw. Track which categories are being invited โ and at what scores โ with the live Express Entry Draws tracker.
Step 4: Consider a Provincial Nominee Program (PNP)
A provincial nomination adds 600 CRS points โ effectively a guaranteed invitation. Each province targets different occupations and profiles. Use the PNP Finder to match your background to active streams.
Step 5: Budget the real costs
PR is not free, and IRCC requires you to prove you have settlement funds (unless you have a valid job offer or are applying under CEC). Plan ahead with these tools:
- Proof of Funds calculator โ how much you must show for your family size.
- PR Cost Calculator โ government fees, ECA, language tests, medicals and biometrics.
- Cost of Living tool โ compare cities before you choose where to land.
Step 6: From ITA to landing
- Receive your Invitation to Apply (ITA) after a draw.
- Submit your full PR application within 60 days, with documents (ECA, language results, reference letters, proof of funds, police certificates, medical exam).
- Complete biometrics and wait for processing โ check typical timelines with the Processing Time tool.
- Receive your Confirmation of PR (COPR) and land.
