Here is the confusion that costs applicants real points: IELTS gives you band scores, but Canada's Express Entry runs entirely on Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) levels. Your CRS points are calculated from your CLB โ not your band โ so you need to convert correctly before you can plan. This guide gives you the official conversion chart and shows what each level is worth.
Skip the math: paste your four bands into the free IELTS Band & CLB Calculator and it returns your overall band, your CLB per skill, and your estimated CRS points instantly.
The official IELTS โ CLB conversion (General Training)
| CLB Level | Listening | Reading | Writing | Speaking |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| CLB 10 | 8.5 | 8.0 | 7.5 | 7.5 |
| CLB 9 | 8.0 | 7.0 | 7.0 | 7.0 |
| CLB 8 | 7.5 | 6.5 | 6.5 | 6.5 |
| CLB 7 | 6.0 | 6.0 | 6.0 | 6.0 |
| CLB 6 | 5.5 | 5.0 | 5.5 | 5.5 |
Notice that each skill has its own threshold โ your CLB is calculated per skill, not from your overall band. A 7.0 in Reading is only CLB 9, but a 7.0 in Listening is CLB 7. That asymmetry trips up a lot of people.
Why CLB 9 is the number everyone chases
Hitting CLB 9 across all four skills ("first official language" at high proficiency) does two things at once:
- It maximises your direct language points in the core block.
- It unlocks the highest tier of skill transferability points, where language combines with your education and work experience.
That double-counting is why moving from CLB 8 to CLB 9 can add far more CRS points than the raw band jump suggests. Before you assume you need a retake, confirm where you actually stand with the Language Test Converter.
Roughly how many CRS points is each level worth?
For a single applicant, first-language points scale sharply with CLB. As a rough guide per skill block (direct + transferability combined), the climb from CLB 7 โ CLB 9 is typically worth 50 to 100+ points depending on your education and experience. That is often the difference between sitting below the cut-off and receiving an ITA.
CELPIP and TEF convert too
If IELTS is not your test, CELPIP maps almost 1:1 to CLB by design, and French TEF/TCF results convert to CLB as your second official language โ which can add up to 50 bonus points and open lower-cut-off French category draws.
Your next step
Convert first, then decide. Run your scores through the IELTS Band Calculator, see your CLB and CRS impact, then feed that number into the full CRS Score Calculator to view your total. If a retake gets you to CLB 9, it is almost always the highest-return move in your entire profile.
