About Typing Speed Test

This typing speed test measures your words per minute the standard way: correct characters divided by five, per minute of typing. That "five characters equals one word" convention is what typing tutors and hiring tests have used for decades, and because only correctly typed characters count, the score is a net WPM — mistakes lower it rather than inflating it. The clock starts on your first keystroke, not when the page loads, so you are never penalised for reading the passage first.

As you type, every letter is marked live — green for correct, red for wrong — with the current word highlighted so your eyes never lose their place. Scoring is word-aligned: each word you type is compared against the matching word in the passage, so a single slip or a missed letter in one word doesn't cascade and wreck the rest of your run. Pasting is disabled, and your best WPM is saved locally in your browser so you can watch it climb across sessions.

Each test is a short passage of a sentence or two, drawn at random, which makes this a sprint rather than a marathon: a fifteen-second check you can run between tasks. Everything happens in your browser — nothing you type is sent anywhere — and it works on any device with a keyboard.

Frequently asked questions

How is WPM calculated in this test?
WPM = (correctly typed characters ÷ 5) ÷ minutes elapsed. Five characters is the standardised "word", which stops long or short words from skewing results between runs. Because only correct characters count, this is net WPM — the figure employers and typing certifications care about — not gross WPM, which ignores errors.
What is a good typing speed?
Average adults type around 40 WPM. 60–80 WPM is a strong professional speed, and 100+ puts you in enthusiast territory. While improving, accuracy matters more than speed: at 95%+ accuracy, speed comes naturally with practice, whereas rushing at 85% builds habits you will have to unlearn.
Why didn't my best score update after a fast run?
The best-WPM record only saves when your accuracy is 85% or higher, so mashing keys quickly can't set a fake record. Your best is stored in your browser's localStorage — it stays on your device and will reset if you clear site data or switch browsers.
Why is my WPM here different from other typing tests?
Three reasons: passage length (short sprints read faster than 60-second tests because there is no fatigue), scoring method (net vs gross WPM can differ by 10+ WPM), and error handling (this test compares word by word, so one typo doesn't invalidate everything after it, which some strict character-by-character tests do). Compare your trend on one test rather than absolute numbers across tests.
Does one typo ruin my whole score?
No. Scoring is word-aligned: completed words are checked whole, and the word you are currently typing is checked letter by letter. An error costs you only the characters that were actually wrong, and accuracy is simply correct characters divided by everything you typed.
