Visual Memory

The Visual Memory test flashes a pattern of lit tiles on a grid, hides it, and asks you to tap every lit tile back from memory. Each level lights more tiles on a steadily bigger grid — up to 6×6 — and you have three lives for the whole run: tap a wrong tile three times and the game ends, revealing any tiles you never found.

What it measures is visuospatial short-term memory: your ability to hold a spatial pattern in mind after it disappears. Unlike a sequence test, the tiles here light up together and you can return them in any order, so the challenge is pure pattern retention rather than remembering an order of events. Researchers probe the same ability with tasks like the Corsi block test and change-detection paradigms.

Three difficulty modes change how the test ramps. Casual shows fewer tiles for 1.5 seconds, Normal is the standard benchmark with a one-second flash, and Hard starts on a 4×4 grid with more targets and only 0.8 seconds to look. Your personal best is stored separately for each difficulty in your browser, and on Normal the results screen also shows roughly what percentage of players you beat — the typical run ends around level 9.
