About Number Memory
Number Memory is the classic digit span test: a number flashes on screen, disappears, and you type it back from memory. Get it right and the next number is one digit longer; one slip ends the run. Your score is the number of digits you successfully held in your head.
Digit span is one of the oldest measures in cognitive psychology — versions of it have been used since the 1880s, and it still appears in the Wechsler intelligence scales today. It measures short-term memory capacity, famously summarised by George Miller as "the magical number seven, plus or minus two". Most adults top out around 7 digits forward, which is exactly where the average player lands here.
This version also includes reverse mode — the backwards digit span test — where you type the digits in reverse order. That is a genuinely harder task, because you have to hold the number and mentally manipulate it at the same time, which is why backward spans typically run about two digits shorter than forward spans.
The display time scales with difficulty: roughly a second for the first digit plus about 0.7 seconds per extra digit, capped at seven seconds, so long numbers never give you unlimited reading time. Your best score is saved separately for each mode in your browser, and nothing you type is ever sent anywhere.

The average adult recalls about 7 digits forward — Miller's famous "seven, plus or minus two". Reaching 9 digits puts you clearly above average, 11+ is rare, and forward spans of 14 or more are exceptional territory usually reached only with memory techniques. In reverse mode, expect your score to drop by roughly two digits; that is normal.
Forward digit span mainly tests storage: you hold the digits and replay them. Backwards digit span adds manipulation — you must keep the whole number in mind while mentally flipping its order, which loads the working-memory "executive" much harder. That extra demand is why the backwards version is used clinically as a working-memory measure, and why most people score about two digits lower on it.
Chunking is the single biggest upgrade: instead of nine separate digits, hold three groups of three, the way you naturally remember a phone number. Saying the chunks with a rhythm helps too, as does attaching meaning — a year, an age, a familiar area code. Memory athletes extend this into full digit-to-image systems, which is how spans of 50+ digits become possible.
The reveal time grows with the number: about one second at level 1, plus roughly 0.7 seconds for each additional digit, capped at seven seconds. A shrinking bar shows how long you have left. The cap matters — at 10+ digits you no longer get proportionally more reading time, so an efficient chunking strategy beats slow re-reading.
