About Sequence Memory
Sequence Memory is a serial-recall test in the spirit of Simon, the 1978 electronic toy that made "watch the pattern, repeat the pattern" a household game. Tiles flash one at a time — each with its own musical note — and you tap them back in exactly the same order. Every round replays the whole sequence with one new tile added to the end, so a level-10 run means you reproduced a ten-step sequence perfectly.
Because order is everything, this measures something different from a pattern test: sequential working memory, the same faculty you use to follow directions, dial a number you just heard, or learn a piece of music. The per-tile notes are not decoration — they follow the classic Simon insight that a sequence with a melody is easier to hold than a silent one, so your ears back up your eyes.
You can tune the challenge: play on a 3×3, 4×4 or 5×5 grid, and choose one life for a pure test or three lives for practice — with three lives, a mistake costs a heart, hints the correct tile, and replays the round. Personal bests are saved per grid size in your browser, since a 5×5 sequence is a much harder beast than a 3×3 one. On the classic 3×3 the results screen also estimates your percentile; a typical run ends around eight steps.

On the classic 3×3 grid, a typical run ends around a sequence of 8, so anything longer is above average — the game shows your approximate percentile after each 3×3 run. Reaching 12 puts you around the top 10% of players. Bests are saved separately for each grid size, because a 4×4 or 5×5 sequence of the same length is considerably harder.
Both hide a pattern and ask you to recall it, but here the tiles light one at a time and you must repeat them in the exact same order — serial recall. In the Visual Memory test the tiles flash together and order is irrelevant. They exercise related but distinct abilities: this one is closer to following spoken directions or learning a melody; that one is closer to remembering a map at a glance.
Each tile has its own pitch, so the sequence forms a little tune as it plays — the same trick the original Simon used. Melodies are easier to remember than silent position lists, so the audio gives your memory a second channel to encode the sequence. If you prefer a purely visual test, the sound toggle mutes it.
Replay re-shows the current sequence while you are answering, useful for practice. Lives set how forgiving the run is: with one life, any wrong tap ends it — the pure benchmark. With three, a mistake costs a heart, briefly hints the correct tile, and replays the round so you can try that same sequence again. Either way, your score counts only sequences you fully reproduced.
Chunk the sequence into groups of three or four steps rather than one long chain, the way you would a phone number. Tracing the path as a shape — an L, a zigzag, a loop — turns positions into a single visual object, and humming along with the tones adds a melodic anchor. The playback speeds up slightly as sequences grow, so chunking early pays off later.
