About Minesweeper Online — Play Free, No Download
Play Minesweeper online free, right in your browser — no download, no install, no app-store clone stuffed with ads. This is the classic logic puzzle that shipped with Windows in the early 1990s and taught a generation to right-click: every number tells you how many mines sit in the eight cells around it, and your job is to deduce where they all are and clear everything else.
All three classic layouts are here with their original mine counts — Beginner (9×9, 10 mines), Intermediate (16×16, 40) and Expert (30×16, 99) — plus a custom mode up to 40×40 with a live mine-density readout. Your first click is always safe: mines are placed only after it, keeping the clicked cell and its neighbours clear so you never lose on move one. Speed players get chording (click a satisfied number to reveal its remaining neighbours at once, via double-click, middle-click or tapping the number), optional ?-marks, and keyboard shortcuts. On phones, tap reveals and a long-press plants a flag.
Best times are tracked per difficulty and stored locally in your browser, and when a game ends you can share your result in one tap. Lose, and misplaced flags are marked so you can see exactly where your logic went wrong — the fastest way to actually get better. A zoom toggle keeps the Expert board playable on smaller screens.

Frequently asked questions
Each number counts the mines in the up-to-eight cells touching it. A "1" with only one unrevealed neighbour means that neighbour is certainly a mine; a "3" already touching three flags means every other neighbour is safe. Chains of these deductions — especially the classic 1-2-1 pattern, where the mines sit under the 1s — solve most of the board without guessing.
Chording reveals all unflagged neighbours of a number at once, but only when the number already has exactly that many flags around it. It is the single biggest speed upgrade in Minesweeper. In this version you can chord three ways: double-click the number, middle-click it, or simply click/tap a revealed number. If your flags were wrong, chording detonates — that is the built-in accuracy tax.
No. The board is generated after your first click, and both the clicked cell and its surrounding cells are kept mine-free (on extremely dense custom boards where that zone cannot fit, at least the clicked cell is guaranteed safe). This matches how modern Minesweeper implementations behave, so openings usually cascade into a useful starting area.
Long-press a cell to plant or remove a flag; a normal tap reveals. The flag counter at the top shows mines minus flags placed, and the zoom button cycles cell sizes so even the 30×16 Expert board is playable on a small screen.
Mostly logic — but on randomly generated boards a true 50/50 can appear, typically along walls and in corners at the end of a game. You can minimise forced guesses by leaving ambiguous regions for last (more revealed numbers means more information) and, when a guess is unavoidable, preferring cells that touch fewer numbers. The standard Expert board averages around a 20% mine density, so disciplined play wins far more than it loses.
