About Reading Speed — WPM
This reading speed test measures how fast you actually read in words per minute (WPM) — not just how fast you can skim. You read one of several short non-fiction passages while a timer runs, tap Done, then answer three quick comprehension questions. Your WPM is only banked as a personal best when you get at least two of the three right, so speed never counts unless you genuinely took the text in.
A second tab flips the idea around with an RSVP speed reader — Rapid Serial Visual Presentation. Instead of your eyes sweeping across each line, single words flash one at a time in a fixed spot, with a tinted focus letter and slightly longer pauses on long words and end-of-sentence punctuation. Because your gaze never travels, RSVP can push you well past your natural pace. Run it on the built-in passages or paste your own text and dial the speed anywhere from 100 to 900 WPM.
For reference, the average adult reads roughly 238 words per minute with solid comprehension; 300 and up is fast, and consistently reading above 450 with real understanding is genuinely rare. Reading on a screen tends to run a touch slower than print. All timing and scoring happen right in your browser, and your best WPM is stored only on your device.

Frequently asked questions
The test counts the exact number of words in the passage and times you from when you start reading until you tap Done. It divides the word count by the minutes elapsed to give your words-per-minute figure, then shows the passage length and your time so you can see how the number was reached.
The typical adult reads around 238 WPM with good comprehension. Somewhere near 200 is average, 300 or more is above average, and sustained speeds past 450 WPM are uncommon. Higher raw numbers only matter if comprehension holds up, which is why this test pairs every read with a short quiz.
Raw speed is easy to fake by skimming, so the test asks three questions about what you just read and only saves your best WPM when you score at least two out of three. That keeps the number honest — it reflects reading you actually understood, not just how fast your eyes moved down the page.
RSVP flashes one word at a time in a fixed position so your eyes never move, removing the small jumps (saccades) that normal reading relies on. It is a real speed-reading technique that lets many people process text faster than they can with page reading. You can practise on the sample passages or paste your own text and adjust the pace.
