💡 CELPIP-General: what makes it different

  • 🖥️ 100% computer-delivered. You type every written answer and speak into a headset — there is no paper booklet and no live examiner in the room, so all four skills are marked to the same digital standard.
  • ⏱️ One sitting, about three hours. Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking are all completed on a single day in one session — no split appointments to schedule.
  • 🔢 Clean 1–12 scale. Each skill returns a whole level from 1 to 12 that equals your CLB directly — no half-bands to interpret and nothing to round.
  • 🍁 Canadian English throughout. Accents, spelling and situations reflect everyday life in Canada, which many test-takers find natural if they plan to settle here.
  • 📨 Fast results. Scores are typically released within about four to five business days, and CELPIP-General is accepted by IRCC for Express Entry and Canadian citizenship.

Educational estimate based on IRCC's official language-test equivalency and Comprehensive Ranking System charts. Always confirm current requirements on canada.ca before you apply. Not affiliated with CELPIP or IRCC.

About CELPIP to CLB Converter & CRS Points

CELPIP-General maps one-to-one to the Canadian Language Benchmark: a CELPIP level of 9 in a skill is CLB 9, an 8 is CLB 8, and so on all the way to 12. This converter takes your four CELPIP scores — Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking — and shows the CLB for each skill, then highlights your governing level, which is simply your lowest of the four. IRCC always judges eligibility on that weakest skill, so seeing it up front tells you exactly where you stand.

It goes further than a plain lookup. For the scores you enter it previews your CRS first-official-language points using the official Comprehensive Ranking System table, with a toggle for single applicants (up to 136 points) and applicants with a spouse or common-law partner (up to 128). Those language points are age-independent, so they add on top of whatever you earn for age, education and work experience — and they are usually the single biggest lever a candidate can pull.

The tool also spells out what each result unlocks: the CLB 5 floor for Canadian Experience Class on TEER 2-3 jobs, the CLB 7 minimum for Federal Skilled Worker, the CLB 9 threshold that pushes you into the top CRS band, the skill-specific bar for Federal Skilled Trades, and the CLB 4 speaking-and-listening requirement for Canadian citizenship. A full CELPIP-to-CLB table and a CELPIP-versus-IELTS equivalence chart let you compare tests or double-check a score at a glance.

Everything runs in your browser — nothing you type is uploaded or stored — and the figures follow IRCC's published equivalency and CRS charts. Treat it as a fast planning estimate and confirm current requirements on canada.ca before you file, since program minimums and CRS cut-offs change.

Frequently asked questions

Yes. Unlike IELTS, where each CLB corresponds to a different band per skill, CELPIP-General is built on the same 1–12 scale as the Canadian Language Benchmarks. Your CELPIP level in a skill is your CLB in that skill — CELPIP 9 is CLB 9, CELPIP 7 is CLB 7. Scores of 3 or below fall under CLB 4, which is the floor for the main federal economic programs.

It depends on the program. Canadian Experience Class needs CLB 5 in all four skills for TEER 2-3 jobs and CLB 7 for TEER 0-1 jobs; the Federal Skilled Worker Program needs CLB 7 in every skill; and Federal Skilled Trades needs CLB 5 in speaking and listening plus CLB 4 in reading and writing. CLB 9 in all four skills is the point where you jump into the top CRS language band and unlock the strongest skill-transferability bonuses.

A lot. As a single applicant, CLB 9 in all four skills earns 124 first-language points (31 per skill), while CLB 7 earns 68 (17 per skill) — a 56-point swing that often decides whether you get an invitation. CLB 10 or higher earns the maximum of 34 per skill. With a spouse, the per-skill points are slightly lower (29 at CLB 9, 32 at CLB 10+). These points are added regardless of your age.

For adult citizenship applicants aged 18 to 54, IRCC requires CLB 4 or higher in speaking and listening. On CELPIP-General that means a level 4 or above in both of those skills. Reading and writing are not part of the citizenship language requirement, though you still need to pass the citizenship test itself.

Both are accepted by IRCC and convert to the same CLB, so neither gives you an inherent points advantage — only your actual scores matter. CELPIP-General is fully computer-delivered, finished in one roughly three-hour sitting, uses Canadian English, and reports whole 1–12 levels with no half-bands. IELTS is paper-or-computer, may split speaking to a different day, and uses 0.5 bands. The CELPIP-versus-IELTS table in this tool shows the equivalent scores side by side.
