About Typing for Kids — Free Typing Practice Game
This free typing practice for kids (ages 5–10) starts before reading does: in Letters mode a giant colourful letter appears, a friendly voice says it out loud, and the matching key sparkles on the on-screen keyboard — so even a five-year-old can play with zero instructions. Early readers move up to Words mode with 3–5 letter sight words like cat, sun and play, and confident readers type short, silly Sentences.
It quietly teaches real touch-typing habits from day one. Every key is colour-coded by the finger that should press it — pinkies pink, ring fingers orange, pointer fingers green and blue — and a hint under the stage names the exact finger for the next key. There are no fail states anywhere: a wrong key just wobbles with a soft, gentle sound while the right key keeps sparkling, so kids stay encouraged instead of anxious. Correct keys climb a happy musical scale, and finished letters, words and sentences earn stars, streaks and confetti.
Everything runs in your browser — no account, no downloads, and nothing a child types is ever sent anywhere. It works with a real keyboard on laptops, by tapping the screen on tablets, and has a one-tap Big Screen mode that makes it perfect for classroom smartboards and projectors.

Frequently asked questions
Roughly ages 5–10. Letters mode needs no reading at all — the letter is shown huge, spoken aloud, and the right key sparkles — so pre-readers and kindergarteners can start immediately. Words mode suits early readers practising 3–5 letter sight words, and Sentences mode gives 6–10 year olds short, fun sentences with real spaces to type.
Yes, gently. The on-screen keyboard is coloured by finger zone using the standard touch-typing map (the same colour means the same finger on each hand), and a hint names the exact finger — “left pointer finger”, “right pinky” — for every key, including the thumb for the space bar. Kids absorb which finger owns which key long before formal speed drills, which makes later touch-typing courses much easier.
Completely free — no account, no sign-up, no app to install. The whole game runs inside your browser, and nothing a child types is uploaded, logged or stored on any server. Stars and best streaks are saved only on your own device, so it is safe for schools with strict privacy rules.
Deliberately not. Young children learn faster without timers, error percentages or fail screens, so this game rewards them with stars, streaks and confetti instead of a words-per-minute score. A wrong key simply wobbles and the correct key keeps glowing — the child can never lose. Once a kid types sentences comfortably, they can graduate to our regular typing speed test for real WPM scores.
