About Virtual Xylophone for Kids — Play & Follow Songs
This virtual xylophone gives kids eight rainbow bars covering one full octave of C major — from middle C up to high C, the same layout as a toy glockenspiel. Tap the bars on a phone or tablet, click them with a mouse, or play with the keyboard keys A S D F G H J K. Every strike is synthesized live with the Web Audio API — a bright bell tone built from the fundamental note, its harmonics and a tiny mallet "tick" — so there are no sound files to download and it keeps working offline once loaded.
Three modes take a child from banging to actually playing. Free Play is the open instrument. "Play for me" performs one of six built-in nursery rhymes — Twinkle Twinkle, Mary Had a Little Lamb, Happy Birthday, Old MacDonald, Hot Cross Buns and BINGO — while the matching bars light up. "Follow along" then flips it around: the next bar in the song glows and pulses, the child taps it, and a progress bar fills until the whole tune is played. Finishing a song earns a mastered star, and the collection of mastered songs is tracked across visits.
Note-name labels (C, D, E…) can be shown on every bar with the matching keyboard key underneath, quietly connecting colours to real letter names — a gentle first step towards reading music. There is a volume slider, and all settings and mastered songs are saved only in your browser; nothing is uploaded anywhere.
