About Learn Shapes and Colors — Toddler & Preschool Game

This shapes and colors game for toddlers and preschoolers works like a talking picture book. In Learn mode, children tap any of ten shapes — circle, square, triangle, rectangle, oval, star, heart, diamond, pentagon and hexagon — and it is drawn large and named aloud in a slow, friendly voice. Switch to Colors and ten swatches, from red to white, each fill the whole screen with that colour and anchor it to something familiar: red like an apple, blue like the ocean, brown like a bear.

Play mode flips the direction of learning. Instead of the child naming what they tap, the voice asks "Can you find the triangle?" or "Can you find the colour green?" and the child hunts for it in the grid. Correct picks bring confetti, praise and a rising score with a saved best; wrong ones get a gentle wobble and an encouraging "try again". That switch — from expressive labelling to receptive identification — is exactly how early-years teachers check whether a shape or colour is truly known, not just echoed.

There is nothing to download and no sign-up: it runs entirely in the browser on phones, tablets, Chromebooks and interactive whiteboards, and nothing a child does is sent anywhere. A mute button keeps quiet classrooms calm, and because every name also appears in large text on screen, it still works on devices without a speaking voice. It suits children from about age 2, starting with first colours, up to age 5 tackling trickier shapes like the pentagon and hexagon.

Frequently asked questions

Ten shapes: circle, square, triangle, rectangle, oval, star, heart, diamond, pentagon and hexagon — the first four are the classic toddler set, while pentagon and hexagon stretch children who are ready for kindergarten geometry. Ten colours: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple, pink, brown, black and white, each spoken aloud with a real-world example.

Learn mode is child-led: they tap anything and hear its name, which builds vocabulary through repetition. Play mode is a "find it" game where the tool names a target and the child must pick it out. Educators call these expressive versus receptive knowledge — most children can point to "green" well before they can say it — so Play mode is a friendly way to check what has actually stuck.

Most children begin matching colours between 18 months and 2 years, and can reliably name the main colours and basic shapes somewhere between ages 2 and 4 — the range varies a lot and that is normal. Less everyday shapes such as pentagon and hexagon usually land around ages 4–5, when kindergarten geometry introduces counting sides and corners.

Colour words are abstract — a toddler cannot hold "yellow" the way they can hold a ball. Anchoring each colour to a familiar object (an apple, the ocean, a bear) gives the word a concrete memory hook, which is the same technique used in early-years classrooms and picture books. The tool speaks the pairing aloud and shows a matching emoji every time.

No — each round picks a random target and avoids asking the same one twice in a row, so all ten shapes or colours come up over a session. Shapes and Colors also keep separate best scores, so you can see which of the two your child is stronger at.
