About Canada Citizenship Physical Presence Calculator

This physical presence calculator tracks your days toward the Canadian citizenship requirement: 1,095 days physically in Canada within the 5 years before you apply. Enter your PR landing date, log your trips outside Canada, and the counter shows your day total, a progress bar to 1,095, and a full breakdown — PR days present, pre-PR credit, and days abroad that fall inside your eligibility window.

It follows the same rules as IRCC's official calculator: departure and return days both count as days in Canada (only full days abroad are subtracted), and time spent in Canada before becoming a PR — as a worker, student or protected person — counts at half a day each, capped at 365 days of credit and only within the 5-year window. Where this counter goes further is forward planning: instead of naively adding your remaining days to today, it re-simulates the sliding 5-year window at future dates, because presence and half-day credits at the trailing edge fall out of the window as it moves. The projected eligibility date you see accounts for that.

When you have a date, one tap downloads a calendar (.ics) reminder with a 7-day advance alarm. Everything is saved locally in your browser — your travel history never leaves your device — so you can update the counter after each trip. It checks the days requirement only; confirm tax-filing and other criteria with IRCC before you apply.

Frequently asked questions

Yes. IRCC counts any day where you were in Canada for part of the day as a full day of physical presence, so both your departure day and your return day count. This counter applies the same rule automatically: a Friday-to-Monday trip costs you only two full days abroad (Saturday and Sunday), not four.

Days you were physically in Canada as a temporary resident — worker, student or protected person — before becoming a PR count as half a day each, up to a maximum credit of 365 days. Crucially, only pre-PR days that fall inside your 5-year eligibility window count at all. Tick the pre-PR checkbox, enter your temporary stay dates, and the counter applies the half-day rate and the 365-day cap for you.

Because the 5-year window slides forward with you. As your application date moves later, old days — including valuable pre-PR half-day credits — fall out of the back of the window, so you can gain less than one net day per day. This counter re-simulates the full window at future dates rather than just adding your deficit, which is why its projection is realistic where a simple addition would be optimistic.

Most applicants build a buffer of days beyond 1,095 first. If IRCC's count differs from yours — a forgotten day trip to the US, a miscounted travel day — an application filed at exactly the minimum can be returned or refused. Waiting even a few extra weeks in Canada gives you margin for error, and the counter's calendar reminder makes it easy to schedule a comfortable application date.

It applies the same core rules — 1,095 days in the sliding 5-year window, travel days counting as present, and the pre-PR half-day credit capped at 365. What it adds is forward projection of your earliest eligibility date, a calendar export, and trip storage on your own device so you can keep it updated trip after trip. It remains an estimate: run your final numbers through IRCC's official calculator before submitting your application.
