Thrissur runs on a mix of old-economy strength and new-economy ambition. It's the largest hub of gold jewellery manufacturing in Kerala, with an estimated Rs 700 crore of gold business changing hands in the city every day, and roughly 70% of Kerala's daily plain gold jewellery output made here across some 3,000 manufacturing units and 40,000 artisans. It's home to Kalyan Jewellers' headquarters, and to three private-sector banks — South Indian Bank, CSB Bank and Dhanlaxmi Bank — whose head offices sit within a couple of kilometres of each other. Add the Thrissur Ayurveda Cluster at KINFRA Park in Koratty, Vaidyaratnam Oushadhasala, and a growing IT and ITeS presence around Infopark Thrissur, and you have a city with a genuinely diverse economic base.
That diversity comes with its own operational friction. Swaraj Round, the commercial heart of the city, carries an estimated 56,000-59,000 vehicles a day — reportedly the biggest roundabout in South Asia — and the congestion and scarce parking around it make customer footfall and deliveries harder for retail and jewellery businesses in the core commercial districts, worse still during festival season. Meanwhile, most of the city's roughly 3,000 gold manufacturing units still run largely manual, artisan-based production and sales workflows, which makes it genuinely hard to track inventory, orders and production as a business grows past a certain size.
Textile and garment retailers face a related but different squeeze: automation is often seen as expensive, digital literacy is low, and institutional support is thin even with the Chamber of Commerce and the MSME Development and Facilitation Office based in the city — all while margins get pressured by large-scale manufacturers and fast-fashion competition. Ayurveda and herbal pharmaceutical manufacturers, of which around 150 operate in and around Thrissur, face the opposite problem: rising safety, quality-testing and export-compliance requirements that demand more rigorous systems, not less. And across manufacturing and trading businesses generally, limited access to credit and fluctuating raw material costs keep margins thin and cash flow unpredictable.
