Muzaffarpur is the commercial hub of north Bihar, and litchi is its heartbeat. Muzaffarpur and its hinterland grow roughly half of India's litchi, producing around 300,000 tonnes a year across close to 25,800 hectares, and the Shahi litchi trade generates an estimated Rs 300-500 crore in annual turnover for the district. That scale runs through everything from Sarafa Bazaar's trading houses to the wholesalers who move fruit out to the rest of the country during the short litchi season.
Litchi isn't the only thing Muzaffarpur makes. Sudha Dairy (Bihar State Cooperative Milk Producers' Federation) and ITC Limited run dairy and food operations here, Prabhat Zarda Factory (India) Private Limited anchors the district's chewing tobacco and zarda manufacturing, and Bela Industrial Area is home to smaller agro-processing, packaging, engineering and plastics units that feed the wider supply chain. Add in the wholesale and distribution trade that runs through Motijheel and Mithanpura, and you have a district economy that depends on dozens of small and mid-sized businesses keeping stock, orders and logistics straight, season after season.
That's also where the pressure shows. Litchi holds for only 2-5 days after harvest, and Muzaffarpur still lacks the cold storage and cold-chain capacity to hold onto it — a treatment and processing plant set up near the city years ago remains non-functional, so most of the crop moves fresh and local rather than processed or exported, which is part of why Bihar's fresh litchi exports have stayed as low as roughly Rs 2.57 crore against a much larger national litchi trade. Seasonal flooding from the Bagmati and other rivers adds another layer of disruption to roads and operations most years, and in Motijheel itself, encroachment and a shortage of parking make it genuinely hard for traders to get vehicles in and goods out.
We're Workaholic Developers, an AI-first software, web and automation studio. We build practical systems — inventory and dispatch tools, websites, custom software, workflow automation — for businesses in a city that's also home to the MSME-Development Institute, Muzaffarpur Institute of Technology, Babasaheb Bhimrao Ambedkar Bihar University and the North Bihar Chamber of Commerce & Industry. Whether you're a litchi trader working the season, a processor near Bela Industrial Area, or a wholesaler serving the Chamber's member network, we build around how your business already operates.
