Bokaro's economy runs on heavy industry. Bokaro Steel Plant (SAIL) posted a net profit of Rs 600 crore in FY 2022-23 - 45% of SAIL's entire national profit - and is now mid-way through a Rs 15,000-crore brownfield expansion under Vision-2030 that will lift crude steel capacity from 4.65 MTPA to 7.25 MTPA and create an estimated 2,500 direct and 10,000 indirect jobs. Vedanta has separately announced plans for a $3-4 billion, 4.5-million-tonne steel plant in the city, projected to add around 1.2 lakh direct and indirect jobs.
