About Snake Game — Play Neon Snake Online

Neon Snake is the classic snake game rebuilt for the modern browser: a glowing, canvas-rendered snake with a gradient trail chases pulsing food, grows one segment per apple, and dies the moment it hits a wall or its own tail. It loads instantly, needs no download or account, and plays with arrow keys or WASD on desktop and swipe gestures or an on-screen D-pad on mobile.

Four difficulty levels change how fast the snake steps — from a relaxed Easy to a frantic Insane that moves nearly three times as fast — and the harder modes pay for the risk: each apple is worth 10 points, plus a 5-point bonus on Hard and 10 on Insane. You can also switch the walls to pass-through (wrap around the edges instead of crashing), pick a 14×14, 20×20 or 26×26 board, and choose between four neon colour themes. Your best score is saved on your device per browser, and beating a previous record sets off a live celebration mid-run.

Snake traces back to the 1976 arcade game Blockade, but it became a phenomenon when Nokia preloaded it on the 6110 in 1997, putting the game into hundreds of millions of pockets. The timeless strategy still applies here: sweep the board in tight S-shaped rows, keep your head pointed toward open space, and always plan your exit path before you grab the apple.

Frequently asked questions

They change the snake's step speed: Easy moves every 150 milliseconds, Normal every 110, Hard every 80 and Insane every 55 — so Insane is almost three times faster than Easy. Hard and Insane also award bonus points per apple (15 and 20 points instead of 10), so a high score on a fast mode is worth genuinely more.

With walls set to pass-through, the snake wraps: leave the right edge and you re-enter on the left, exit the bottom and reappear at the top. Only your own tail can kill you. With solid walls (the default, marked by a glowing border), touching any edge ends the run — the classic, harder rule set.

It doesn't — inputs are queued. The game stores up to three upcoming turns and applies one per step, which is what lets you tap "up, left" faster than the snake moves and still get both turns. Direct 180° reversals are always rejected, because reversing into your own body would be an instant, unfair death.

Swipe anywhere on the board to steer — the swipe re-anchors as you drag, so you can chain several turns in one continuous motion — or use the on-screen D-pad below the board. The centre D-pad button starts and pauses the game.

Bigger is more forgiving early and harsher late. On 26×26 you have far more open space to manoeuvre, but food is further away so runs take longer; on 14×14 the board fills up fast and even a medium-length snake dominates the grid. The 20×20 default is the balanced middle ground most players use for high-score attempts.
