About Pro Metronome

This online metronome keeps time entirely in your browser using the Web Audio clock, which is why the click stays rock-steady even at 300 BPM. A plain JavaScript timer drifts because it fires "about now"; here every beat is scheduled a fraction of a second ahead against the audio hardware clock, so the pulse lands exactly where it should bar after bar.

You get real musical control, not just a speed dial. Pick a time signature from 2/4 to 12/8, choose a subdivision (quarters, eighths, triplets or sixteenths so the in-between notes tick softly), and tap each beat dot to make it an accent, a normal beat or a rest. Five click voices — click, beep, wood, tick and cowbell — let the sound cut through whatever you are playing, and the swinging pendulum plus flashing downbeat give you a visual pulse when headphones are off.

Two practice aids do the heavy lifting. Tap-tempo finds the speed of a song when you tap along four or more times, and the tempo trainer nudges the BPM up automatically every few bars so you can build a difficult passage from slow to performance speed without touching a thing. The Italian tempo name (Largo through Prestissimo) updates as you move the dial.

Popular uses

  • ✦ Practise a hard passage slow and let the tempo trainer build it to speed
  • ✦ Lock in a steady tempo for recording or rehearsing with a band
  • ✦ Drill odd time signatures like 5/4, 7/8 or 12/8
  • ✦ Feel the internal pulse by practising against triplet or sixteenth subdivisions
  • ✦ Find a song's tempo by tapping along, then loop it back for practice

Frequently asked questions

Why is a browser metronome accurate enough to practice with?
Because it does not rely on a normal timer. Each click is pre-scheduled against the Web Audio hardware clock roughly 100 ms in advance, so browser lag or a busy tab cannot shift the beat. The result is sample-accurate timing that holds steady across long sessions — far tighter than the setInterval drift most simple online tickers suffer from.
What do the tempo names like Largo, Andante and Allegro mean?
They are the traditional Italian tempo markings, each covering a BPM range: Largo (40–60), Adagio (66–76), Andante (76–108), Moderato (108–120), Allegro (120–168), Vivace (168–176), Presto (176–200) and Prestissimo (200–300). The label under the BPM number updates automatically so you can match a score that says "Allegro" without guessing the exact tempo.
How does the tempo trainer help me play faster?
Turn it on and it raises the tempo by a set amount (1, 2, 5 or 10 BPM) every few bars, up to your cap. This is the classic way to build speed on a tricky passage: you start slow enough to play it cleanly and let the metronome creep the tempo up so your hands adapt gradually instead of hitting a wall.
What does the subdivision setting actually do?
It adds softer clicks between the main beats so you can feel the internal pulse. Choose eighths for two clicks per beat, triplets for three, or sixteenths for four. Practising against a subdivision tightens your sense of where the off-beats fall and stops you rushing or dragging inside the beat.
Can I accent or mute specific beats?
Yes — tap any beat dot to cycle it through accent (loud), normal, or muted (silent). This lets you emphasise the downbeat, build a custom accent pattern for odd meters like 7/8, or silence beats to test whether you can keep time through the gaps.
