About 2048 Game — Play Online Free

2048 is the classic sliding-tile number puzzle. Swipe or press an arrow key and every tile on the 4×4 board slides as far as it can; when two tiles with the same number collide they merge into one worth their sum, and that value is added to your score. After each move a new tile appears — a 2 about 90% of the time, otherwise a 4 — and the game ends when the board is full with no merges left. Reach the 2048 tile and you win, though a keep-going mode lets you push on toward 4096 and beyond.

This version of the 2048 game plays instantly in your browser with nothing to install and no account. It works equally well with keyboard arrows on desktop and swipe gestures on a phone or tablet, tracks your current and best score (stored privately on your own device), and lets you share a score challenge with friends in one tap.

The original 2048 was built over a weekend in March 2014 by 19-year-old Italian developer Gabriele Cirulli, inspired by 1024 and Threes, and went viral almost overnight. The strategy that separates casual players from 2048-finishers is simple to state and hard to master: pick one corner, keep your highest tile parked there, build a descending chain of values along that edge, and avoid the one swipe direction that would drag your anchor tile out of the corner.

Frequently asked questions

Commit to a corner. Keep your largest tile locked in one corner and arrange the next-largest tiles in a decreasing "snake" along that edge, merging smaller tiles into the chain. Most players pick two safe directions (say left and down) and only use a third when forced — pressing the fourth direction is what usually scatters the board and ends the run.

Yes. After every move that changes the board, one new tile spawns on a random empty cell: it is a 2 with 90% probability and a 4 with 10% probability — the same odds as the original 2048. That occasional 4 is why you should never build a plan that depends on a specific spawn.

Yes. When you make the 2048 tile a win screen appears with a "Keep going" option. The board and score continue exactly where they were, so you can chase 4096, 8192 and higher — the game only truly ends when no move can change the board.

Every merge adds the value of the newly created tile to your score: merging two 64s adds 128, merging two 1024s adds 2048. Because each big tile is built from a pyramid of smaller merges, simply reaching the 2048 tile earns roughly 20,000 points (slightly less when some tiles spawn as 4s, since those skip a merge).

Your best score is kept in your browser's local storage on this device, so it survives closing the tab or restarting the browser. Nothing is uploaded to a server — which also means the best score is per device and per browser.
