About Nonogram — Picross

Nonograms — also sold as Picross, Griddlers and Hanjie — are picture-logic puzzles that emerged in Japan in the late 1980s, independently invented by designer Non Ishida and puzzle author Tetsuya Nishio. The numbers beside each row and above each column tell you the lengths of the runs of filled cells in that line, in order, with at least one empty cell between runs. Deduce every line correctly and a hidden pixel picture appears.

This version offers 5×5, 10×10 and 15×15 grids, and every puzzle is verified by a built-in line-logic solver to have exactly one solution — so there is always a next move you can prove, and you never have to gamble. Many boards reveal a named picture from a curated gallery. If you fill a cell that should be empty, the game marks it with an X for you and docks one of your three hearts; an optional strict mode resets the board when all three are gone.

Alongside free play there is a shared Daily puzzle whose grid size rotates through the week, with a streak counter, a countdown to the next one, and a shareable result. A timer tracks every solve and your best time is saved separately for each size and for the daily, so speedrunning your favourite grid is a genuine progression. Everything is stored on your device — no account needed.

Frequently asked questions

Each number is a run of consecutive filled cells in that row or column, listed in order. "3 1" in a 10-cell row means a block of three filled cells, then at least one empty cell, then a single filled cell — somewhere in that order. When a line's clue is fully satisfied its numbers grey out, which is a quick visual check that you can X out the rest of the line.

No. Every puzzle here — random and daily — is checked by a solver that resolves the grid using pure row-and-column logic, and is only served if that process completes with a single unique solution. If you feel stuck, it means there is a deduction you have not spotted yet, usually in a line you have partially filled, not that the puzzle requires trial and error.

It is the fastest way to start any line with a big clue. Imagine pushing the run as far left as possible, then as far right as possible: any cells covered in both positions must be filled. For example, a clue of 7 in a 10-cell line always fills the middle four cells no matter where the run sits. Lines where the clue numbers plus gaps nearly fill the line give the most free cells.

Filling a cell that is actually empty costs one heart, and the game automatically converts that cell to an X — since your mistake just proved it must be blank. By default you can keep playing after three mistakes, but if you enable the "3 mistakes end game" option, running out of hearts resets the board for a stricter, Picross-style challenge.

Yes — they are all the same puzzle under different names. Picross is Nintendo's brand, Griddlers and Hanjie are common in European and British puzzle magazines, and nonogram (after Non Ishida) is the generic name. The rules are identical everywhere: number clues describe runs of filled cells, and solving every line reveals a picture.
