About HEIC to JPG

iPhones and iPads save photos as HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container) by default — a format that roughly halves file size compared to JPG, but that many Windows apps, Android devices, websites and upload forms still refuse to open. This HEIC to JPG converter fixes that in seconds: select one or many HEIC/HEIF files and each is decoded and re-encoded to universally supported JPG or PNG.

The conversion is fully client-side. Your photos never leave your device — there is no upload, no server processing and no stored copies — which matters because iPhone photos usually contain personal moments and embedded location data. Batch conversion runs file by file with a live progress counter, and every converted image appears in a preview grid; tap any thumbnail to download that photo.

A quality slider from 50% to 100% controls the JPG size-versus-sharpness trade-off. The 90% default is visually indistinguishable from the original for typical photos while keeping files reasonable. Choose PNG output instead when you need lossless pixels — for images you plan to keep editing — at the cost of a much larger file.

Frequently asked questions

HEIC images are compressed with HEVC (H.265), a patent-encumbered codec: Windows requires a paid HEVC extension to decode it, and most websites, form uploaders and older software were built around JPG and PNG only. Converting to JPG produces a file every device and site made in the last 25 years can open.

JPG for photos, almost always: at the 90% default quality it looks identical to the original and stays small. PNG is lossless but photographic PNGs are commonly 5–10× larger than the equivalent JPG. Pick PNG only when you plan further editing and want to avoid another round of lossy compression.

HEIC is already a lossy format, and re-encoding to JPG adds one more small, controllable loss set by the quality slider. At 90–100% the difference is invisible in normal viewing and printing. Converting cannot add detail back, so the output will match — never exceed — what the original photo captured.

That is expected: HEIC compresses roughly twice as efficiently as JPG, so a JPG of comparable visual quality is often 1.5–2× the size of the HEIC. If the converted files are too large for an email or a portal limit, lower the quality slider to around 70–80%.

Usually the file is not a genuine HEIC: some apps rename JPGs with a .heic extension, and burst or Live Photo exports can produce container variants the decoder cannot parse. Re-export the picture from the Photos app (or AirDrop/email the original at full quality) and convert that copy.
