About Hearing Test — Hearing Age

This test plays pure sine tones that climb in steps from 8 kHz up to 20 kHz — the very top of human hearing. You simply answer "yes, I hear it" or "no, silent" for each tone; the moment a tone goes silent for you, your ceiling is pinned and mapped to an approximate hearing age. The tones are synthesised live in your browser with the Web Audio API, with soft fade-in ramps so there are no clicks, and a volume slider you can adjust mid-test.

Why does the highest frequency you can hear track your age? The cochlea processes high frequencies with hair cells at its entrance, and those cells take the brunt of every sound you have ever heard. They wear out first and never regrow — a process called presbycusis. Newborns can hear to about 20 kHz; by the mid-twenties most people top out around 17–18 kHz, by the forties around 15–16 kHz, and beyond 60 the ceiling commonly sits near 12 kHz. Losing the top octave is completely normal and barely affects daily life, because speech and music live far below it.

Your playback hardware matters as much as your ears here: many laptop and phone speakers cannot physically reproduce tones above roughly 15–16 kHz, which makes you score "older" than you are. Use decent headphones, start with the volume low (high-frequency tones can be sharp), and treat the result as a fun estimate — a real audiogram from an audiologist measures much more than a single upper limit.

Sound enters the cochlea at its base, where the hair cells tuned to high frequencies sit. Every sound you hear passes over these cells on its way in, so they accumulate the most lifetime wear — and human hair cells do not regenerate. Loud-noise exposure (concerts, headphones, machinery) accelerates the same damage, which is why two people of the same age can have very different ceilings.

As rough population norms: teenagers often reach 18–20 kHz, people in their twenties 17–19 kHz, thirties to forties around 15–17 kHz, fifties around 14 kHz, and 12 kHz or so is typical past sixty. This test maps your top heard tone to those bands. Scoring a band or two "older" usually means speaker limitations or background noise rather than a problem.

It is a tone around 17.4 kHz that most adults over about 25 cannot hear. It has been used both as a teen-deterrent device outside shops and, in reverse, as a ringtone teenagers can hear but their teachers cannot. This test's 17 kHz step sits right in that band — if you hear it clearly, your ears are performing like a young adult's.

Not necessarily. This test only probes the extreme top of the range (8–20 kHz), while speech sits mainly between 250 Hz and 8 kHz — so you can "fail" every tone here and still have perfect everyday hearing. The most common culprits are speakers that cannot reproduce high frequencies, low volume, or background noise. If you have real-world symptoms like struggling to follow conversation, see an audiologist for a proper audiogram.
