About FIRE Number & Coast-FIRE Calculator

This FIRE calculator finds the three numbers that define a path to financial independence: your FIRE number, your FI age, and your Coast-FIRE milestone. Your FIRE number is annual expenses divided by your safe withdrawal rate — spend $45,000 a year at a 4% withdrawal rate and you need $1,125,000 invested to fund that spending indefinitely.

To estimate when you get there, the calculator runs a year-by-year simulation: it starts from your current savings, grows the portfolio at your expected real (inflation-adjusted) return, and adds your annual savings — income minus expenses — each year until the balance crosses the FIRE line. The chart draws that growth curve in today's dollars, marks the FIRE target as a dashed line, and drops a dot on the exact year you reach financial independence, alongside your projected FI age and years to FI.

It also computes Coast-FIRE: the amount you would need invested today so that, with zero further contributions, compounding alone carries it to your FIRE number by your chosen retirement age. A progress bar shows how close you are, and once you cross it, everything you save after that is optional acceleration rather than necessity.

All inputs stay in your browser — they are saved to local storage on your device so your plan is waiting when you return, and nothing about your income or savings is ever uploaded. The share button lets you send your FI age and FIRE number to a partner without exposing the underlying inputs.

Frequently asked questions

FIRE number = annual expenses ÷ safe withdrawal rate. At the classic 4% rule, that is simply 25× your annual spending: $40,000 of expenses means a $1,000,000 target. The logic comes from the Trinity study, which found a portfolio has historically sustained a 4% initial withdrawal (adjusted for inflation) over a 30-year retirement. The calculator lets you set any rate from 2% to 8% to see how the target moves.

Regular FIRE means your portfolio can fund your expenses right now. Coast-FIRE means you have enough invested today that compound growth alone — with no more contributions — will reach your FIRE number by your target retirement age. It is calculated as FIRE number ÷ (1 + return)^years remaining. Hitting Coast-FIRE means you only need to cover current living costs from work, not keep saving aggressively.

Using a real (after-inflation) return keeps every figure in today's dollars, so your FIRE number stays comparable to your current expenses without you having to inflate them. If you expect roughly 7–8% nominal from a stock-heavy portfolio and 2–3% inflation, a real return of about 4–5% is the common planning assumption. Entering a nominal return here would make your FI date look unrealistically early.

The 4% rule was tested against 30-year retirements. If you retire at 35 or 40, your money may need to last 50+ years, so many in the FIRE community plan on 3% to 3.5% for extra margin — which raises the target to roughly 29–33× annual expenses. Try both in the calculator: the gap between a 4% and 3.25% plan is often several years of additional saving, and seeing it explicitly helps you pick your own risk tolerance.

No — it is a deliberately clean pre-tax model: savings compound at your chosen return and are drawn down at your chosen rate. Taxes on withdrawals, future pension or government benefits, and one-off costs are not modelled. A practical workaround is to enter slightly higher annual expenses (to cover withdrawal taxes) or a lower withdrawal rate, and treat the result as a planning estimate rather than a guarantee.
