About Live Air Quality (AQI) Now
This live air-quality checker reads the pollution right where you are. Tap "My location" or search any city, and it pulls the current reading and short-term forecast from Open-Meteo's air-quality model, then scores it on the US EPA Air Quality Index — the familiar 0 to 500 colour scale that runs from green "Good" to maroon "Hazardous".
The dial shows the headline US AQI, which is driven by whichever pollutant is worst at that moment. Below it you get the six ground-level pollutants behind that number in µg/m³: fine particulate PM2.5 (the one that reaches deep into your lungs), coarse PM10, ozone (O₃), nitrogen dioxide (NO₂), sulphur dioxide (SO₂) and carbon monoxide (CO). A colour-matched card translates the score into plain advice — whether to exercise outside, open a window or wear a mask.
Two extra views help you plan. A cigarette-equivalent line uses the Berkeley Earth rule of thumb (about 22 µg/m³ of PM2.5 for a day roughly equals one cigarette) to make the number visceral. The hour-by-hour curve highlights today's cleanest and peak hours, and a four-day forecast charts each day's expected maximum AQI. It is awareness information built on modelled data, not medical advice or an official monitor reading.

Frequently asked questions
It is the US EPA Air Quality Index, a 0–500 scale. 0–50 is Good (green), 51–100 Moderate (yellow), 101–150 Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups (orange), 151–200 Unhealthy (red), 201–300 Very Unhealthy (purple) and 301+ Hazardous (maroon). The single number reflects whichever pollutant is worst right now, so a high reading can come from smoke particles on one day and ozone on another.
PM2.5 is fine particulate matter under 2.5 micrometres — small enough to bypass your nose and throat and settle deep in the lungs and bloodstream. It is the pollutant most strongly linked to health effects from wildfire smoke, traffic and industry, which is why it usually drives the headline AQI and powers the cigarette-equivalent estimate shown on the card.
Readings and the four-day forecast come from Open-Meteo's air-quality API, which blends atmospheric models with monitoring networks. The card shows the timestamp of the latest reading, and "Refresh" pulls a new one. Because it is modelled rather than a reading from a monitor on your street, treat it as a close estimate — a nearby official station can differ, especially during fast-changing smoke events.
It applies a well-known Berkeley Earth rule of thumb: breathing roughly 22 µg/m³ of PM2.5 for a full day is comparable to smoking about one cigarette. It only appears when there is meaningful particulate in the air, and it is a rough intuition aid, not a clinical measure of harm.
Air quality is intensely local, so the tool offers to use your device's GPS to fetch the reading for your exact spot. Your coordinates are used only to query the air-quality API for that request — nothing is stored. If you decline, just type a city name and it works the same way.
