About Solitaire (Klondike)

Klondike is the solitaire most people simply call "solitaire". The name comes from the Klondike Gold Rush region of Canada, where the game is said to have passed the time in prospector camps, but it was a 1990 software decision that made it ubiquitous: Microsoft bundled it with Windows 3.0 to teach people how to drag and drop with a mouse, and it became one of the most-played computer games in history.

This is the complete game, not a stripped-down demo. You can play Draw 1 or Draw 3, and choose the deal type: an easier shuffle, a normal random deal, a deliberately tough one, or Vegas with its casino-style scoring. There is unlimited undo and redo, an animated hint that highlights a playable card, and an auto-complete that sweeps everything to the foundations once the endgame is decided. A timer, move counter and score run during play, and your best score is saved on your device.

Good Klondike is mostly about information: every face-down card you flip expands your options, so prefer moves that reveal cards — especially from the tallest buried columns — over moves that merely look tidy. Keep empty columns for kings, and do not reflexively send every card to the foundations; a low card parked up there can strand cards of the opposite colour that still need somewhere to sit in the tableau.

Frequently asked questions

In Draw 1, each tap of the stock turns over a single card, all of which you can play immediately — the easier, more forgiving game. In Draw 3, cards come off the stock in threes and only the top card of the fan is playable, so cards can stay buried through a whole pass. Draw 3 is the traditional "hard" Klondike and rewards planning several stock passes ahead.

No. Even with perfect play and full knowledge of the deck, a meaningful share of Klondike deals are unwinnable, and since you cannot see the face-down cards, practical win rates are much lower than the theoretical ceiling — for most players well under half of draw-three games. That is why the deal-difficulty setting exists here: Easy biases the shuffle toward friendlier layouts while Hard serves up tougher ones.

Auto-complete unlocks once the stock and waste are empty and every card in the tableau is face-up. At that point the game is mathematically finished — nothing hidden remains — so the button simply sweeps the remaining cards up to the foundations in order and plays out your win, saving you a few dozen routine drags.

You can drag any card or stack, but tapping is usually quicker: with smart-tap enabled, tapping a card sends it to the best legal spot automatically, and on desktop a double-click does the same. Tap the stock to draw, and use the keyboard shortcuts Z (undo), Y (redo), H (hint), A (auto-complete) and N (new deal) if you have a keyboard handy.
