About Your Life in Weeks

Your Life in Weeks turns a single number — your date of birth — into a grid where every small square is one week you have lived or have still to live. The idea, popularised by Tim Urban's "Your Life in Weeks" essay, is that a human life is startlingly finite when you can see all of it at once: a lifetime of 80 years is only about 4,160 squares.

The maths is deliberately simple. Weeks lived are the whole weeks between your birthday and today; the total is your chosen life expectancy multiplied by 52, and the difference is the weeks that remain. Each row holds exactly 52 squares so one row reads roughly as one year. Filled squares are the weeks behind you, the amber square ringed in dark is the week you are living right now, and the pale squares ahead are still unwritten.

Everything runs in your browser. Your birthday is saved only in your device's local storage so the grid is there when you come back, and it is never uploaded or logged. When a version moves you, you can download it as a captioned PNG or share the summary — weeks lived and the percentage of your life so far — with a friend.

Frequently asked questions

A calendar year is about 52.18 weeks, but showing 52 per row keeps each row aligned to a clean "one year" band, which makes the whole life much easier to read at a glance. Over a long life this rounds a little, so treat the grid as an honest picture rather than a to-the-day count.

Only in your own browser, using local storage, so your grid reloads next time you visit. Nothing is sent to a server, uploaded or logged — you can clear it any time by clearing your browser data.

Yes. The life-expectancy field accepts any value from 1 to 120 years and defaults to 80. Raising or lowering it changes the total number of squares and the "percentage of your life" figure instantly.

The single amber square with a dark outline is the exact week you are in right now — the boundary between the weeks you have lived and the weeks still ahead of you.

Yes. "Download as PNG" saves a captioned image of your grid, and the share button copies (or, on mobile, natively shares) a short summary of your weeks lived and how much of your life has passed.
