About IELTS & CELPIP Vocabulary Practice Quiz (CLB 7–9)

This is a ten-question IELTS and CELPIP vocabulary quiz built around what those exams actually reward: precise word choice. The bank holds 80+ questions across four types — synonyms, collocations, word choice in context, and definitions — pitched at CLB 7 to 9, the band range that matters for Express Entry and most Canadian immigration programs.

Pick your question types and difficulty (CLB 7 core words, or CLB 8–9 for the harder nuance vocabulary), and optionally switch on timed mode with 8 to 30 seconds per question to simulate exam pressure. Every answer gets instant feedback with a one-line explanation of why the right word wins — the classic traps like affect vs effect, "make a decision" rather than "take" one, or ambiguous vs ambitious. At the end you get an indicative CLB band, a green-and-red answer grid, and a full review of every question and explanation.

Your daily streak, best score and quiz count are stored in your browser only — there is no account and nothing is sent anywhere. Each retake reshuffles both the questions and the answer order, so you cannot memorize positions, and the shareable result grid makes it easy to keep a study partner honest.

Frequently asked questions

CELPIP is easy: its levels equal CLB directly, so CELPIP 9 is CLB 9. For IELTS General Training, CLB 7 requires 6.0 in all four abilities, while CLB 9 — the level that unlocks maximum Express Entry language points — requires Listening 8.0, Reading 7.0, Writing 7.0 and Speaking 7.0. The band shown on this quiz's results screen uses those reference points as an indicative label for your vocabulary control.

Because examiners score lexical resource on whether words are combined naturally, not on how rare they are. English speakers "meet a deadline", "draw a conclusion" and "pay attention" — swap in the wrong verb and the sentence sounds off even though every word is correct. Collocation errors are one of the most common reasons writing and speaking scores stall at CLB 7–8, which is why this drill dedicates a whole question type to them.

No — treat it as a vocabulary diagnostic, not a mock exam. The real tests also measure listening, reading speed, grammar range, coherence and pronunciation. What a consistent 90%+ here does tell you is that word choice is unlikely to be what holds your writing and speaking scores back, so you can spend your remaining prep time on structure and fluency instead.

CLB 7 drills the core academic and workplace words every candidate must control — essential, obtain, sufficient, reliable. CLB 8–9 targets the nuance vocabulary that separates a good band from a great one: mitigate, meticulous, plausible, undermine, negligible. Mixed mode blends both, which is the closest match to how the real exams spread their vocabulary.

Completing at least one ten-question drill on a calendar day extends your streak by one; playing five times in one day still counts once. Skip more than a full day and the streak resets to zero. It lives in your browser's local storage, so it is tied to the device and browser you practise on.
