About Readability Analyzer

This readability checker scores your writing against six published formulas at once — Flesch Reading Ease, Flesch–Kincaid Grade, Gunning Fog, SMOG, Coleman–Liau and the Automated Readability Index — and blends the grade formulas into a single consensus grade level. It counts words, sentences, syllables and complex words as you type, then highlights very hard and hard sentences, passive voice, adverbs and long words directly in your text, with plain suggestions on what to trim.

The formulas all measure roughly the same two things: how long your sentences are and how many syllables your words carry. Flesch Reading Ease returns a 0–100 score where higher is easier; the grade formulas instead estimate the US school grade a reader needs. Because they use different maths, the tool averages the five grade formulas so one outlier can not skew the verdict. Syllables are counted with an English heuristic and sentences are split with decimal- and abbreviation-aware rules, so scores are close to — but may differ slightly from — other readability tools.

For most general audiences aim for a consensus grade of about 8 and a Flesch ease of 60–70; marketing, email and web copy read best there. Technical or academic writing naturally lands higher. Everything is calculated in your browser and never uploaded, so the same text always produces the same exact, repeatable scores.

Frequently asked questions

Flesch Reading Ease runs from 0 to 100 and higher means easier. A score of 60–70 is considered standard and comfortable for the general public, which is the sweet spot for most web pages, emails and marketing copy. Below 50 the text is getting difficult and suits specialist readers; above 80 it is very easy and clear to almost everyone.

It is the average of the five grade-based formulas (Flesch–Kincaid, Gunning Fog, SMOG, Coleman–Liau and ARI), expressed as a US school grade — roughly the years of education a reader needs to follow the text on a first read. Averaging them smooths out the quirks of any single formula. Aim for grade 8 or lower to reach a wide adult audience.

Sentences are split on ., ! and ? but the tool masks decimals like 3.14 and common abbreviations (Mr., e.g., U.S.) so they do not cause false breaks. Syllables come from an English heuristic that counts vowel groups and handles silent trailing "e" and pronounced "-ed" endings. A word is "complex" when it has three or more syllables — the same threshold the Gunning Fog and SMOG formulas use.

Those are style flags, not grammar errors. Passive voice is detected as a form of "to be" followed by a past participle (for example "was written"), and adverbs are words ending in "-ly". Both tend to add length and soften your writing, so switching to active voice and stronger verbs usually makes a sentence tighter — but you decide which flags matter for your piece.
