We Built a Free YouTube Trends Observatory — Here's the Architecture (and Live Data)

PULSE (youtube.workaholicdevelopers.com) is a free, real-time YouTube trends observatory that we — the team at Workaholic Developers — designed, built, and now maintain in production. It refreshes trending video data and channel growth figures every 3 hours across 12 countries and 8 YouTube categories, with growth histories on roughly 4,000 channel pages. Why We Built a YouTube Trends Observatory

The existing tools for YouTube trend analysis fall into two camps: expensive SaaS platforms locked behind paywalls, or one-dimensional leaderboards that show a snapshot with no historical context. Neither serves independent creators or small newsrooms well. We wanted something that answered three questions simultaneously:

• What is trending right now? — Per country, per category, refreshed frequently enough to catch fast-moving moments.
• Who is growing fastest? — Subscriber velocity over a meaningful window (7 days), not just raw size.
• What does the trend history look like? — So you can see whether a channel's spike is a one-off or part of an upward pattern.

Building it in public, and making it free, also serves our own interests: it demonstrates what our engineering team is capable of, and it gives the creator economy a genuine public good. The Architecture of PULSE

Data Ingestion: A 3-Hour Heartbeat

Every 3 hours, PULSE's ingestion layer fires scheduled jobs for each of the 12 tracked countries. Each job calls the YouTube Data API for the regional trending chart, captures up to 50 video placements (the API's maximum for a given region), and writes the raw payload into a time-series store. This is a deliberate trade-off: 3-hour cadence gives us near-real-time signal without burning through API quota in a way that would be unsustainable for a free public tool.

For the 49–50 trending placements cached per country (India returns 50; Canada, the US, and the UK each return 49 — a natural variation in how the YouTube API responds per region), we store the full video metadata: title, channel, view count at time of capture, like-to-view ratio where available, and category ID. That category ID is what allows us to slice results across the 8 tracked YouTube categories.

Channel Growth Engine

Trending video detection alone is reactive — you see what already broke. The channel growth engine is where PULSE becomes predictive. When a channel appears in a trending placement, it is enrolled in periodic subscriber polling. Over time, this builds a 7-day subscriber delta for each channel — the figure we surface on the "fastest-growing" leaderboards.

Currently, PULSE maintains growth history pages for approximately 4,000 channels globally. The 7-day window strikes the right balance: short enough to reflect recent momentum, long enough to smooth out single-day anomalies caused by a viral spike that normalises the next morning.

Regional Observatory Endpoints

Rather than one monolithic dashboard, PULSE is structured as a set of regional observatory endpoints. The two most active, based on current traffic, are the India trending board and the Canada rising channels board. Each endpoint is a lightweight server-rendered page — fast to load, crawlable by search engines, and embeddable for journalists pulling live data into articles.

Fastest-Growing Channels by Country (7-Day Subscriber Change)

The percentage column is where the real story lives. SoyScruffy in the UK grew 44.1% in a single week — a signal that would be invisible in an absolute-numbers-only leaderboard dominated by channels with tens of millions of subscribers. Similarly, DrDonut Clips in the US added 13.4% in seven days, a clip-channel pattern we see frequently when a long-form creator's highlight reel algorithm catches.

Top Trending Videos by Country (5 August 2026)

The UK data point is striking: Hz1no's "MINOR THINGS" reached the top trending slot with only 5,397 views at the time of capture. This illustrates something PULSE is specifically designed to surface — YouTube's trending algorithm weights engagement rate and velocity, not just raw views. A breakout audio track with high save and share rates can outrank videos with hundreds of thousands of views. This is the kind of early signal that music labels and talent scouts need, and it is free to access.

What PULSE Is Not

Transparency matters. PULSE does not have access to YouTube Studio's private analytics, watch-time data, or audience demographics — those remain proprietary to creators and to YouTube. What PULSE surfaces is derived entirely from public API data: chart placements, subscriber counts, and view figures at the moment of each 3-hour capture. Think of it as a weather station, not a weather model: highly accurate measurement, not prediction.
